The pairings for the 2011 SWAC Baseball Tournament are set as the eight-team, double elimination tournament begins Wednesday at Shreveport's Fair Grounds Field.
The final two seeds were decided Sunday as league officials announced that the final regular season contest between Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State would not need to be played in the interest of student-athlete safety and welfare. The game was to be played in Vicksburg, Miss., which has been at the center of the Mississippi River flooding.
However, with those teams not playing and Mississippi Valley State not having to risk tying Jackson State for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Division, league officials also awarded Jackson State the No. 2 seed over the Delta Devils even though JSU officially ends the season one-half game behind MVSU in the standings.
The Delta Devils (East #3) will open the tournament Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. against defending champion Grambling (West #2). The noon game Wednesday pits Jackson State (E#2) against Prairie View A&M (W#3). Alcorn State (E#1) will take on Texas Southern (W#4) at 3:00 p.m. on opening day, and the final game of the first round will have Southern (W#1) taking on Alabama State (E#4). Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alabama A&M failed to qualify for the tournament.
