MOBILE, Ala. — Less than a week after snapping a 19-game losing streak, Mississippi Valley State suffered a 35-3 loss to South Alabama Thursday night in their final road game of the season.
The Jaguars (6-3) only gained 252 total yards, but used a stout defensive effort and 100-yard kickoff return to rattle the Delta Devils (1-9).
South Alabama used three 1-yard TD runs to take a 21-0 lead at halftime before J.J. Keels returned the second half's opening kickoff 100 yards for a score. USA quarterback Myles Gibbon hooked with up Greg Hollinger for a 56-yard score with nearly five minutes left in the third to take a 35-0 lead.
A fumble recovery by Marquez Floyd set up a 28-yard field goal by Valley's Carlos Sanchez with less than a minute remaining, avoiding a shutout for the Delta Devils.
Trey Bateaste paced Valley with 60 rushing yards while quarterback Garrick Jones picked up 41 on 15 carries. Jones went 7-of-23 for 67 yards through the air.
Kwaku Boa had six tackles (two for loss) while Armon Williams paced the Delta Devils with seven tackles. South Alabama outgained MVSU 252 to 166.
MVSU will close out its season next Saturday, Nov. 12, when they
host Arkansas Pine-Bluff at Rice-Totten Stadium at 1 p.m.
