Assistant Coach/Special Teams David Cunningham
David Cunningham is in his second season as a member of the MVSU football staff. Bringing impressive credentials with him, Cunningham will serve as special teams coordinator and assist with the offensive side of the football as wide receivers coach. Cunningham joins the Delta Devil program after two seasons as special teams coach at Nicholls State University. Prior to his stint with the Colonels, he served as head coach at McPherson College from 2002-2006. During his five year tenure at the helm for the Bulldogs, he led McPherson College to a 24-26 record. The 24 career wins is second all-time amongst the head coaching ranks at McPherson College. McPherson College also cracked the NAIA Top 25 for the first time in school history under Cunningham with the Bulldogs climbing as high as No. 18 in the polls in 2004. Before he was head coach for the Bulldogs, Cunningham served as the Offensive Coordinator for McPherson College from 2000-01. During his year of absence from the McPherson program, the Campbellsville, Kentucky native spent 2001 coaching defensive backs for the Houston Thunderbirds in the Arena Football League. Prior to 2000, Cunningham was the defensive coordinator at Kentucky Wesleyan College from 1998-99. From 1996-97 he was the head coach at Sun Bennett College after working from 1993 to 1995 at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Cunningham played for Kentucky Wesleyan College from 1983-87 before playing in the European Football League in 1988 with the Heathrow Jets of London, England, the Terassa Sticks of Terassa, Spain in 1991, and the Herlev Rebels of Copenhagen, Denmark in 1993. His father, the late Lou Cunningham, was the head basketball coach at Campbellsville College for 25 years, and his mother, Barbara, is a retired high school Spanish teacher. His brother Phil is an assistant basketball coach at Mississippi State University.
