Devilettes Place Five on All-League Teams

In a return to form for the Devilette softball squad, five members of the program were chosen to the 2011 SWAC Softball All-Conference teams as the honors were announced Tuesday afternoon.

RHP Kimberly Spivey was named SWAC Pitcher of the Year; joining her on the first team were 3B Alex Robertson and OF Rashundra Brass.  Named to the second team were C Nicole Burr and 1B Shana Ladner.

Spivey, also named league Preseason Pitcher of the Year, was among the conference leaders in several statistical categories, especially during conference play.  Overall, she had a 13-14 record with a 3.64 ERA.  She threw 163 1/3 innings while striking out 134 and holding opposing batters to a .289 average.  During conference games, she held a league-low 0.72 ERA with a 9-1 record.  In 67 2/3 innings pitched, she struck out 59 batters while walking only nine.

Robertson lead the team in batting average (.415), runs (31-tie), hits (51), home runs (5-tie) while being second on the team in runs batted in (30), doubles (11) and triples (3-tie).  In SWAC action, she held a .455 batting average with 22 runs scored, 18 runs batted in and seven doubles.

Brass fought threw injuries in her final campaign as a Devilette.  She tallied a .309 batting average, 27 runs scored, 34 hits, five doubles, three triples, five home runs and 25 runs batted in. During conference games, she compiled a .417 batting average with 14 runs scored, two doubles and two triples.

Burr, in her first season at MVSU, had a .301 batting average, 22 runs scored, eight doubles, five home runs and led the team with 38 runs batted in.  In SWAC games, she built a .396 batting average with 15 runs scored, five doubles and four home runs.

Ladner, in 44 games, had a .318 batting average, 16 runs scored, 41 hits, four doubles, two home runs and 23 runs batted in.  In conference action, she had a .453 batting average with 10 runs scored, two doubles and a triple.

The Devillettes claimed the top seed in the Eastern Division and will begin play in the 2011 SWAC Softball Tournament as they take on Grambling State Thursday at 2 pm at the Shea Brothers Complex in Irondale, Alabama.
