Elimination game versus Southern at 9 am Sunday
The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes fell 4-2 in ten innings to the Southern Lady Jaguars during the semifinals of the 2011 SWAC Softball Tournament. The Devilettes will take on the Lady Jaguars in an elimination contest Sunday at 9 am.
MVSU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Rashundra Brass scored on a fielder's choice.
For the next four innings, it was classic MVSU-Southern softball as both teams played stellar defense. Southern would break into the scoring column in the top of the sixth when Jasmine Payne scored on a Kiah Williams single.
From the seventh to the ninth innings, both teams had opportunities to score, but were not successful. In the tenth frame, Southern would have Gail Thibeaux on second base with the international game rules in effect. A errant throw by MVSU would score Thibeaux giving Southern a 2-1 lead. Faydra Hall would score on a bases-loaded balk and Audrey Phillips would score on a Victoria Stewart single for a 4-1 Lady Jaguar lead.
MVSU's Cortney Davis would score on a fielder's choice and a throwing error in the bottom of the tenth, but that would end the scoring threat.
For Southern (21-23), Victoria Stewart went 2-for-5 while Audrey Phillips, Kiah Williams, Shaban Brown and Jasmine Payne each had a hit. Michael Pless worked 10 innings walking four and striking out two.
For MVSU (25-24), Alex Robertson, Taylor Pleasant and Ashley Hobbs each went 1-for-4. RHP Kim Spivey worked ten innings allowing six hits, three walks while striking out 14.
