The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes are the preseason favorites to win the 2012 SWAC softball title according to league coaches and SIDs. MVSU edged Jackson State in the voting by one point.
Meanwhile, MVSU junior pitcher Kimberly Spivey was voted the Preseason SWAC Pitcher of the Year. Last season, the Dallas native finished 14-16 with an ERA of 4.49. She had four shutouts with 175 strikeouts. It marks the second consecutive year Spivey has won the award. She finished last season as Pitcher of the Year and was a member of the 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region Team.
Also, two Devilette players were named to the Preseason First Team All-SWAC squad while three others were selected to the Second Team. Spivey and infielder Alexandria Robertson (Jr., Cedar Park, Texas) were named to the first-team. Nicole Burr (Catcher, Jr., Monterey, Calif.), Diana Parade (INF, Sr., Pecos, Texas) and Ashley Hobbs (OF, Sr., Freeport, Texas) were named Second Team.

MVSU opens its season on Friday, Feb. 10, in a tournament at Louisiana-Lafayette. The Devilettes will face Lafayette at 4 p.m. before taking on Tulsa at 6:30 p.m.
