MVSU falls during SWAC Tournament

The 2009 Mississippi Valley State Devilettes went 1-2 during the 2009 SWAC Volleyball Tournament.  The ladies fell to Prairie View in the first round before staging off elimination with a straight-set sweep of Southern.  Again facing Prairie View in elimination action, MVSU fell 3-1.  Maura Moed received all-tournament honors as she 35 kills, 16 blocks and seven aces.

Game 1: Prairie View A&M Defeats Mississippi Valley State 3-1

Prairie View A&M overcame Mississippi Valley State 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21) to maintain a position in the winner’s bracket and take on the winner of the Alabama A&M/Southern match this afternoon. Cheri Lindsay had a game-high 21 kills for the Lady Panthers while Shaun Williams added 13. Erin Fondel posted 51 assists in the match and Sapphire Reid tallied a game-high 16 digs. MVSU was led by Brychana Williams with 12 kills. Maura Moed and Shonese Evans each accumulated 11 kills in the game. The Devilettes will face the loser of the Alabama A&M/Southern match this afternoon.

Game 5: Mississippi Valley State Gets 3-0 Win Over Southern

With a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-20) win over Southern, Mississippi Valley State avoids elimination and stays alive to take on the loser of the Prairie View A&M/Alabama A&M match this evening. All-Eastern outside hitter Kantessa Bryant led the Devilettes with 10 kills while Brychana Williams and Maura Moed each added eight kills. Jane Peterson nabbed a game-high 13 digs. Southern’s All-Western outside hitter Candace Southall etched 12 kills and nine digs for the Lady Jaguars. With the loss, SU is eliminated from the tournament.

Game 9: Prairie View A&M Extends Run with 3-1 Win over Mississippi Valley State

 Led by Cheri Lindsay’s 22 kills, Prairie View A&M advances to the semifinals round with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20) win over Mississippi Valley State. After dropping the first set, the Lady Panthers soared back and swept the last three sets to secure their spot in the semifinals. Sapphire Reid added 10 kills while Erin Fondel registered 38 assists. Kantessa Bryant led MVSU with 18 kills. With the loss the Devilettes are eliminated from the tournament.
