Devilettes Take Second Place in Houston

The Miss. Valley State Devilette volleyball team finished second place in the 2010 Texas Southern Season Opener over the weekend.  After falling to St. Thomas (TX) in four sets (26-28, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25), MVSU downed Arkansas-Pine Bluff in four sets and host Texas Southern in five sets.

During their tournament opener, Lonnie Hoff had 17 kills and 15 digs while Maura Moed added 16 kills and five blocks.  However, close set scores did not lead to a win for the Devilettes.

Against Arkansas-Pine Bluff – a 3-1 win for MVSU (25-15, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20), Moed tallied 16 kills, four aces and three blocks while Hoff added 13 kills, 17 digs and three blocks.

In the win over Texas Southern (25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 21-15, 15-11), a tough contest went back and forth on scoring and momentum.  Moed had a match-high 21 kills while Hoff and Bry Williams had 18 and 11 kills respectively.

Moed finished with 53 kills, six aces, eight digs and 12 blocks.  Hoff tallied 48 kills, three aces, 44 digs and three blocks.  Williams had 24 kills, six aces, 49 digs and five blocks while Chylla Nault added 16 kills, two aces, 13 digs and seven blocks.  Mandee Fruson had 59 assists, six digs and six blocks while April Brown tallied 65 assists and 22 digs.  Defensively, Jane Peterson had 69 digs and three aces while Savanna White had 31 digs and a block.

Moed and Hoff were named to the all-tournament team.
