BATON ROUGE, La. -- Alia Frank and De'Kisha Fondon combined to score 30 points Monday night, but it wasn't enough to fend off the Lady Jaguars of Southern University.

Southern (11-9, 10-3 SWAC) defeated the visiting Mississippi Valley State Devilettes 63-59 and took over sole possession of first place in the conference. Valley is just one game behind the Lady Jaguars.

Frank led the Devilettes with 17 points while Fondon chipped in 13 for a MVSU team that shot 33.9 percent (21 of 62).

Jasmine Jefferson (13 points) and Laneisha Stephens (10 points) paved the way for Southern, who shot 32.8 percent (20 of 61).

The Devilettes led 28-25 at halftime, but Southern took advantage of 32 free throw attempts to upend a tough MVSU squad. Southern went 22 of 32 from the charity stripe while Valley finished 10 of 16.

MVSU (12-12, 9-4 SWAC) will host Prairie View on Saturday.
