ITTA BENA (September 17, 2012) –
Mississippi Valley State University’s (MVSU) preliminary Fall 2012 enrollment number of 2,467 is an increase over last year’s Fall 2011 enrollment figure of 2,452. This increase is significant considering the university had previously experienced consecutive declines in enrollment each year since 2005.
“We are pleased that students continue to select Mississippi Valley State University as their first choice for a high quality education and to reach their dreams. This is demonstrated by increases in all categories of new student enrollment, “said Dr. Donna H. Oliver, MVSU President.
This result aligns with the university’s enrollment projections and strategies developed in 2010.
“The increase in freshman and transfer enrollment is due to our diligent efforts in implementing our strategic recruitment and marketing plan,” said Dr. Jerald Adley, Vice President for Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, and Diversity.
“We have shifted our paradigm from traditional recruitment methods to innovative relationship building with high school guidance counselors and community college transfer coordinators,” said Adley.
Preliminary numbers indicate an increase of 18% in freshmen students, 3% in transfer students, 9% in new graduate students as well as a 29% increase in students who were readmitted after having previously left school.
“Increasing enrollment is our university’s top priority, and we are working diligently to attract students for whom Valley is the best fit. This is a long-term challenge, and an area in which change takes place gradually. We are pleased that our university’s enrollment has stabilized,” said Dr. Oliver.
Initially created by the state legislature in 1946 to train teachers for rural and elementary schools in the Mississippi Delta, Mississippi Valley State University is one of eight state supported institutions for higher education in the state of Mississippi’s consortium of Institutions for Higher Learning (IHL).
